Breaking the Fertility Cycle

For most of human history, fertility was local. Communities understood that fertility was not a product that appeared on a shelf. It was part of a living cycle, a cycle that they, like all animals and plants, belonged to. Over the last century, we broke that cycle.

Modern agriculture is now deeply dependent on globally traded synthetic fertilizers produced through energy intensive industrial systems and transported across oceans, borders, rail systems, and highways before finally reaching a farm. In many ways, this energy intensive system succeeded. Yields increased dramatically, food production grew, and modern farming became possible at a scale humanity had never seen before. We would not have the population on this planet today if we had not found new ways of increasing the productivity of our farmland. A confluence of factors, including soil degradation and changing weather and heat patterns threatens the massive productivity gains seen over the last 100 years.
The focus for the next century should be on building resilient farming systems, not just on maximizing fertility outcomes. When fertilizer prices spike because of geopolitical conflict halfway around the world, we are reminded how fragile our nutrient systems really are. Farmers are being forced to make fertility decisions based on international energy markets instead of soil and crop conditions. It might be time to ask whether the system as we know it makes sense anymore

Ontario produces enormous volumes of organic residuals through food waste processing, anaerobic digestion, agriculture, and industrial organics management. Much of this material still carries valuable nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, carbon, and micronutrients. Historically, these resource streams have been treated as disposal problems or utilized inefficiently instead of being treated like strategic agricultural resources.

The opportunity now is to rethink them as nutrient feedstocks that can be refined, stabilized, and transformed into usable agricultural products. Farmers do not simply need “organic alternatives” to the molecules they are putting on their fields. Farmers need fertility that rebuilds natural systems and soil function while remaining practical within the physical and mechanical context of modern agriculture.
